For over ten years, Gajusz Foundation has been assisting terminally ill children and their families in going through their prematurely shortened lives in a dignified and least painful way.

For the last 10 years, it has been running home hospices, where the patients are looked after by doctors and volunteers. One and a half years ago, it opened an inpatient hospice. This exceptional place, called Pałac (Palace), is located in the vicinity of a busy road crossing. The old fence grid around the hospice’s backyard does not provide a sense of intimacy and peace to the patients looked after by the Gajusz Foundation and their families. Here, not only separation from the city turmoil was needed, but also the creation of a place comfortable for the struggling children. This mission was carried out by volunteers supported by funds provided by Kulczyk Foundation.

“My son got ill when he was 9 days old. The only chance was bone marrow transplant, and yet we found no donor.” says Tisa Żawrocka-Kwiatkowska, the founder of the organization. “While I was at an isolation ward, through a glass I saw an orphaned girl passing away on her own. At this point I swore to God that if my son gets better, I would establish a foundation associating volunteers who could take care of all lonely children in the hospitals of Łódź. Several days later we received good results for Gajusz. My son did recover, today he is 18 years old and is just completing his high school education”, she adds.

The characters of the second episode are patients looked after by the Gajusz Foundation, members of their families, volunteers and extremely devoted personnel. Those stories are particularly moving: the one of the Wiewiór brothers suffering from an incurable genetic disease, a 9-year-old Wiktoria who takes care of her brother, doctors Aleksandra and Łukasz who cofounded the Foundation, or the one of Dariusz, a volunteer, who has been active in the Foundation for many years. Regular people are also heroes – a dentist, pupils or pensioners who decided to do something meaningful and devote their time to those who have really limited time left.

Tisa Żawrocka - Kwiatkowska President of the Gajusz Foundation

Herself mother of a teenager Gajusz, who was born in a severe condition. The experiences related to the difficult time she shared with her son in the hospital motivated her to found the Foundation. Today she represents the organization and supervises its activities. Her vision and ideas make it possible to put into practice even the most extraordinary solutions. She took a risky decision to start the construction of Pałac – Hospicjum Stacjonarne dla Osieroconych Dzieci (Palace – Inpatient Hospice for Orphaned Children). Probably because no one had told her that this would not work.

Dariusz Sokołowski Volunteer at the Gajusz Foundation

When the Gajusz Foundation was established, Dariusz embarked on volunteering. For 9 years he looked after Arek – partly at his home, and party in the hospital. The boy was suffering from leukemia, and his outlooks were promising. However, in 2007 he died. Darek was very close to the boy and his family, and his death was a blow to him. He abandoned volunteerism, retreated, and did not want to continue helping other children for fear of getting emotionally involved. Yet, after several years he returned to the foundation. Now he is starting his service at a home hospice, looking after the Wiewiór brothers and their father.
