Over 59 thousand persons stay at the largest camp for Syrian refugees in Kurdistan, Iraq.

ACTED is providing aid to Syrian refugees in Jordan, Lebanon and Iraq. In Dominz, a camp for Syrian refugees, it has been running programs regarding child care called Child Friendly Space as well as animation activities for children. Regional authorities and NGOs operating in Iraqi Kurdistan are making attempts to provide access to education to Syrian children from refugee camps.

Kulczyk Foundation, supporting childcare programs conducted by ACTED funded a library for the children in the Domiz camp. In the building meant to be a day-care center where children would be able to read, do their homework and spend their free time, preparatory works were conducted among others by the children themselves. They could decide on their own how it would be arranged and furnished.

STAGES

ACTED has been operating in Iraq since 2003, i.e. from the time of the second military conflict in the Persian Gulf. Its activities were initially aimed at improving healthcare, sanitary and living conditions of persons displaced because of the conflict.

Since the first wave of refugees from Syria arrived in Iraq in 2012, ACTED has been involved in planning and developing refugee camps. It launched care programs, including one dedicated to children and funded partially by ECHO (The Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department of the European Commission) which provided funds from its Nobel prize award.
