We are supporting a clinic for Syrian refugees in Lebanon

Bire Akkar, Lebanon
humanitarian aid

The aim of the project is to enhance access to basic medical care for a group of about 10 thousand Syrian refugees in Bire and neighboring towns. The activities undertaken here are to provide access to medical services, especially in the area of pediatrics and internal medicine.

Since March 2011 as many as over 1 million refugees from Syria arrived at the territory of Lebanon. This number accounts for over 20% of Lebanese population (4.8 million persons). Most of the refugees inhabit borderlands and Bire is a case in point. Due to increased number of people staying there, a number of problems have occurred in terms of insufficient infrastructure, too few jobs and problems with access to education and health care.

The clinic in Bire commenced its operations in January 2014, when the incidence of respiratory diseases among refugees went up. Right now the facility is open three times a week and awaits additional funding. In agreement with the UNHCR the clinic will support the treatment of children and persons with chronic diseases. The beneficiaries of these activities will be both refugees and the local community.

STAGES

In January 2014 the PCPM launched a primary health care clinic with the area of about 80m2. Under the project, the venue will be adjusted to the needs of such a facility, that is basic medical equipment will be purchased.

The funds provided by Kulczyk Foundation will be allocated to the expansion of the services rendered by the clinic, paying out remuneration to the staff and refinancing part of required medications and medical devices. Monthly operational costs of the primary health care clinic amount to at least USD 2,500. The aim of the project is to make sure the clinic will continue its activity until the end of June 2014.
