We are facilitating access to healthcare in Panama

Panama
humanitarian aid

Panama is a country marked by a serious social divide. One fourth of the society leave below the poverty line, without being able to have their basic needs met; for them, a doctor’s appointment is only a dream. Organization called “Floating Doctors” is trying to make this dream come true, reaching out to those in need. Whereas Kulczyk Foundation is helping out “Floating Doctors” by funding renovation works and the purchase of water ambulances, so that the doctors have a means of transport to get to their patients!

Panama is seen as a beautiful and dynamically growing country, whose capital city is full of sky scrapers and luxurious cars. But when you live away from the capital, the situation is dramatically different. Many regions are inhabited by extremely poor communities who have no access to creature comforts and have to get by in hardly accessible areas. Some of them are affected by social exclusion, as in the case of the Ngobe people, populating southern Panama. In a local province of Bocas del Toro over 80 thousand people live below the poverty line with no access to healthcare whatsoever. The “Floating Doctors” organization, headed by doctor  Ben LaBrot  have been undertaking actions in various countries, organizing teams of floating doctors whose boats can reach places where civilization ends. There, they examine patients and provide them with mediations. This is the only opportunity when they can see doctor. People in need will march up to several days long to reach a medical point!

Kulczyk Foundation resolved to help the “Flying Doctors” expand their fleet so that more doctors will be able to reach more sites where people are waiting for medical assistance. The organization led by Dominika Kulczyk provided funds for the purchase of further boats and renovation of the existing ones.

dr Ben LaBrot Founder of the Floating Doctors

Ben is a medical doctor from California. He has had to do with water since he was a child. In fact he first learnt to swim and only then to walk. He also used to work as a fisherman and a marine biologist. Once he landed in a village in Tanzania. When the inhabitants learnt that he was a doctor, his short visit turned into a several-hours’ long examination of the sick. At this point it was clear to him what it meant to have no access to healthcare. After gaining funding and a proper yacht, he organized a team of volunteer doctors. Now, the hospital can reach the patient. First they started to work in Haiti, then in Honduras, whereas since 2011 they have been active in Panama as well.
