We renovated the school in Hovatraha with the help of volunteers

Hovatraha, Madagascar
infrastructure

The Mahatalaky commune in Madagascar is rather spread out and local communities are isolated from each other. The students of the local school have to cover up to 20 km a day on foot and they are the ones privileged, because there are many children who do not go to school at all.

The goal of the project is to build and renovate elementary schools in this region of Madagascar. Planned activities will improve the conditions for education of children aged between 6 and 14. According to plans, over 2000 students will benefit from the project within the next decade. This would be an important step in the fight with the alarming rate of illiteracy in the Mahatalaky region and comply with the activities specified in the Mahatalaky Commune Development Plan prepared by local authorities.

The project is carried out in cooperation with the Azafady organisation, which has been supporting local communities in the building of schools in Madagascar since 2006. The renovation programme was launched because 6 schools designed by Azafady have recently been extensively damaged.

According to UNICEF’s data from 2011, safety, convenience, and conditions benefiting development of learning are necessary to raise the number of school graduates and improve exam scores. It seems especially important in a country where almost one-third of children aged between 5 and 14 quits school because they have to help out in the household.
